Prairie Diagnostic Services is seeking a motivated, adaptable team player for the position of Laboratory Technologist to join our Necropsy Facility team for a 1 year term.

As a Necropsy Laboratory Technologist, you will be responsible for technical aspects of the Necropsy Facility including:

  • Admitting diagnostic cases, preparing accurate case histories, and interacting with clients.
  • Providing technical assistance to veterinary pathologists and veterinary medical students during necropsy examinations.
  • Performing heavy manual labour with or without the assistance of mechanical aids.
  • Preparing specimens and performing supervised necropsies.
  • Operating the overhead crane and power tools.
  • Preparing animal remains and tissue fixatives for disposal.
  • Sanitation, cleaning, housekeeping and maintenance of the lab and equipment.

You will have knowledge of:

  • Scientific terminologies, theories, principles and applied methodologies, relevant to anatomic pathology.
  • Laboratory techniques and basic procedures relevant to anatomic pathology.
  • Operation and maintenance of scientific laboratory equipment and computerized instrumentation relevant to anatomic pathology.

You will have the:

  • Ability to orally and in writing explain or present technical, scientific, medical information in a clear, accurate and understandable manner, at a level appropriate to the audience.
  • Ability to lead, encourage, co-operate and advise colleagues to promote and maintain a healthy, positive work environment and achieve client, team, and company goals.
  • Ability to monitor and verify facts, techniques, processes, results and actions of staff and their environment to ensure compliance with standards, protocols and policies.
  • Ability to identify, clarify and analyze client concerns in order to provide appropriate analyses to meet or satisfy client needs.
  • Ability to actively listen and to acknowledge concerns, provide explanations and/or options to diffuse or resolve difficult situations with people in a calm and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as a contributing member of a team to achieve individual and common goals to maintain a cohesive work unit.
  • Ability to independently, or as part of a team, assess, plan and adjust work priorities as stat, urgent or routine to meet required objectives, in consideration of deadlines and resource availability.
  • Ability to accurately compile and monitor quality control and test results for statistical information purposes.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze samples or specimens according to established laboratory protocol to ensure timely, precise, accurate results.
  • Ability to apply the principles of standard precautions and proper laboratory practices according to established protocols, safety guidelines and existing legislation to protect self, co-workers, the public and the environment.
  • Ability to responsibly receive, handle, label, document and store samples to maintain specimen/sample integrity within established guidelines.

The knowledge and abilities required for this position are typically acquired through the completion of an accredited Veterinary Technology program.  An equivalent combination of suitable education and relevant work experience may be considered.

Typical hours of work are weekdays 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, weekend and overtime work may be required.  Call duty is assigned on a rotational basis on weekends and holidays.  As an expectation of this work environment, you may be exposed to unknown, potentially pathogenic organisms.
